Willy has to surface, after the rain,

so he will not drown in the water that’s made.

He also breathes air absorbed through his skin;

the slime on his body keeps moisture in.

Without sticky slime, the worm would dry out;

he needs it to live and to wiggle about.

Early one morning as Willy woke up,

loud noises and movements came from above.

Wiggling his way to the top of the dirt,

he finds trenchers digging deep in the earth.

“Oh no!” thinks Willy, “What will we do?

Our home is in danger, and the other worms too!”

He knows he must warn his family and friends.

He rushes to find them to make escape plans.
